Beware! Killer Hornets!

As if our poor honeybees weren't in enough trouble. The UK is under threat of invasion by Asian hornets whose main prey are bees. These killers can destroy a bee colony in just a couple of hours. They have already spread through France and Spain and are now poised on the other side of the Channel. It's not just bees at risk either. In 2009 at least seven people were taken to hospital after being attacked in France.

Ragweed Could Invade Britain

The pollen from common ragweed can cause severe allergic reactions, including asthma, hay fever and eczema. A native of North America, the plant has already invaded Europe, reaching epidemic levels and reducing crop yields in some regions. As temperatures rise due to global warming, the plant will spread to new areas and produce pollen in greater quantities and for longer periods. The concern is that this highly invasive species will cause health problems for people who suffer from allergies, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
