You may think slime moulds are at the bottom of the evolutionary pile, analysis of their DNA reveals that their evolutionary history goes back about a billion years, but these soil living amoebas are remarkably varied and capable. Though part of their life is spent as a single-celled organism they sometimes gather together into multicellular forms, comprising 20,000 individuals in a single sluglike body, that can crawl or pulsate. Researchers have used the molds to solve mazes, build maps of road networks and even to make music. This wonderfully indepth article by Carl Zimmer for the New York Times includes a slide show and video.
