Toddlers aged between one and two years, who tested positive in a skin prick test to house dust mites, have a higher risk of getting asthma later in life with 75% developing asthma at aged 12 compared to 36% of children who tested negative. It is hoped the study by the University of Melbourne, that followed 620 children, from families with history of allergies, from birth to 12 years old will help to identify high risk groups and help investigate methods of asthma prevention in the future.
