In many species females have multiple mates & the males have adapted to ensure their sperm succeed when in competition with the sperm of other males by increasing sperm count or mating for 21% longer than normal. Such adaptations are not necessary in species where the females mate only once. A team from University of Liverpool have found that amongst fruitflies, once a male has been in contact with another male it then increases the length of time it mates with a female by 93%. It is thought that this apparent paranoid behaviour may be due to the fear that a male is unlikely to obtain another mate.
