Bed Bugs Have Antibacterial Sperm

Bed bugs have a problem. They have a very bizarre method of reproduction which means they are prone to sexually transmitted diseases that can kill up to 40% of sperm. To get round the problem the female guides the male's penis into a mass of germ-fighting cells while the males lace their ejaculate with lysozyme, a bacteria-killing enzyme. As we share many components of our immune system with bed bugs these studies could be relevant to humans.
